The telecommunications giant said it’s getting rid of its pay phones by the end of next year before they become unprofitable.
If you hadn’t noticed, there are fewer pay phones around, down to about 1 million nationwide.
An AT&T spokesman said the company will try to sell 65,000 pay phones placed in prisons and public locations before the end of 2008. Phones that can’t be sold to independent operators will simply be removed.
Bell South has already quit the pay phone business, as has Qwest Communications. (via AT&T Hangs Up On Pay Phone Business - Technology News Story - WPXI Pittsburgh)
